Walter J. Gavenda, Jr.

Walter John Gavenda, Jr, 81, of Annandale, Virginia, passed away on October 26, 2022 in Fairfax, Virginia.

Walt was born in Buffalo, a son of Walter and Rose Gavenda on October 15, 1941.

He graduated from Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University in 1963. He worked for the Central Intelligence Agency for 33 years. His career included two overseas assignments in East Asia and while serving in the Washington Metropolitan area he reviewed and declassified Project Stargate. Following his retirement from the CIA, Walt served as a researcher with a newly formed company, Courage Services, which supported clients in the national security sector.

Following his ultimate retirement, Walt pursued his main passions, writing, researching history and the study of the paranormal. His book A Guide to Haunted West Virginia became a regional best seller.

Walt is preceded in death by his parents Walter and Rose Gavenda, his nephew Thomas Gavenda, and his sister-in-law Ann Gavenda.

Walt is survived by his brother Donald Gavenda of Elba, his niece and three nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 31 at St Ambrose Church, Annandale, VA with the Fr. Rampino of officiating.

Family and Friends are invited to attend a graveside service for Walt at on Thursday (November 3, 2022) at 11:30 a.m. in Maple Lawn Cemetery in Elba. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St Ambrose Catholic Church, 3901 Woodburn Road, Annandale, VA 22003.

The family of Walt wishes to extend our sincere thanks to his wonderful family of friends that have been there for him through out the years.
