Alabama - Samuel Duane Ferris, 53, passed away unexpectedly on June 3, 2026 at Rochester General Hospital, surrounded by family.
Born on November 23, 1972 in Batavia, Samuel lived a life marked by love, dedication, humor, and kindness. He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend who touched the lives of everyone who knew him.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Sheri of 31 years; his loving daughter Jillian; his mother Jean Ferris; his sister Amy (Dave Rees); his brother Travis (Eve) Ferris; mother-in-law, Norma Meyers; his father-in-law, Gary (Deborah) Sumeriski; his brothers-in-law, Alan(Kim) Sumeriski, and Mark (Linda) Sumeriski. His step brother-in-law, Jamie Revis; His nieces and nephews, Kristie (Joe) Kilby, Megan Scroger, Kasey and Alicia Sumeriski, and Aaron and Mitzie (Mike) and Gabby Sumeriski; several cousins and so many friends that had the privilege of knowing him.
He was welcomed to heaven by his father, Leonard Ferris, both of his paternal grandparents, William and Marjorie Ferris, both of his maternal grandparents, Kenneth and Bernice Bump, and his step father in law Donald Meyers
Sam enjoyed living in the moment. He enjoyed riding his side by side with his wife Sheri and the "neighborhood". He was an avid hunter and fisher for many years. He enjoyed spending this time with his father and brother. He enjoyed nothing more than spending his time with his wife and daughter. Whether it was going out to dinner, making dinner at home, anything. Being surrounded by his family is what mattered to him most. Sam was a very skilled carpenter, being in the constriction field for 37 years. He loved to be at home to work on any project he could think of. He was an avid traveler and loved camping with his family through the years. He was a big fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Buffalo Sabres, New York Yankees, and Pittsburgh Steelers. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his generosity, his contagious smile and laugh, and his resilience right up until the end. He would give the shirt off his back to anyone he loved. To his family, he was more than a father, husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend-he was a source of guidance, comfort, and unconditional love.
Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday (June 9, 2026) from 4 to 8:00 p.m. at Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Avenue in Oakfield. Sam's funeral service will be held on Wednesday (June 10, 2026) at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in Reed Cemetery in Oakfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Alabama Fire Department. Please leave a condolence, share a story, or light a candle at www.burdettandsanford.com.
Though his time with us feels far too short, his love and the memories he created will remain in our hearts forever.
