Sadegh Danesh

Dr. Sadegh Danesh, beloved father, grandfather, surgeon, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 after a gradual decline in health following a heart attack in December 2025. Even in his final weeks, his unmistakable sense of humor remained. The nurses at Mt. Carmel Comfort Care House often remarked that he entertained them with stories and laughter, bringing joy to others even as he faced his own suffering.

Sadegh was born in Ashtian, Iran, one of six children raised primarily by his mother, Aziz, after the death of his father. Growing up with limited means, he and his four brothers worked hard to help support the family. His mother instilled in him values that stayed with him throughout his life, often reminding him, "You have two ears and one mouth," encouraging him to listen more than he spoke.

After graduating from Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 1962, Sadegh came to the United States to continue his medical training, intending eventually to return to Iran. Instead, he fell in love with America, the opportunities it offered, and the life he built here. He married Norma Maxine Podolsky, and together they raised three children: Tanya, David, and Robert.

Dr. Danesh completed his general surgery residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia before completing thoracic surgery training at St. Francis Medical Center in Pittsburgh. In 1969, he and his family settled in Batavia, New York, where he practiced surgery for decades at Genesee Memorial Hospital and St. Jerome Hospital. He served in surgical leadership throughout his career and earned the trust and respect of patients, colleagues, and generations of healthcare professionals.

Those who worked alongside him knew him as a skilled, calm, and confident surgeon. Those closest to him knew that his greatest source of pride was not his medical career, but his family. He often said that raising good and decent children was his life's greatest accomplishment.

Sadegh is survived by his former wife, Norma Danesh; his sons, David Danesh (Logan Billingham) and Robert Danesh (Kathleen); his brother, Ali Danesh of Tehran, Iran; and his grandchildren, Anna Danesh, Sarah Danesh, Madelyn Danesh, Arya Billingham, and Eli Danesh. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Tanya Danesh, in 2025.

To his children and grandchildren, he was a loving, supportive father and a doting grandfather. Whether playing sports and games, or simply making everyone laugh with one of his many catchphrases, he came most alive when surrounded by family. His grandchildren knew him as someone who delighted in spending time together, and his laughter during those moments was contagious.

To many who knew and loved him, he was simply "The Chief." The nickname reflected not only his role as a respected surgeon but also his larger-than-life presence. He was as serious about having fun as he was about his work. Whether at the hospital, on the golf course, or around the family dinner table, he brought warmth, humor, confidence, and an unmistakable accent that made him impossible to forget. Having spent much of his childhood immersed in books and the traditions of his upbringing in Iran, he embraced the people, friendships, and experiences he found in America with boundless enthusiasm.

If surgery was his calling, golf was his obsession. Much of his free time was spent on the golf course with friends, enjoying spirited competition, telling stories, and laughing. He believed that life was meant to be lived fully, and he pursued recreation with the same commitment and intensity that he brought to medicine.

His family remembers a man of deep integrity who believed in doing things the right way. He took great pride in his work, expected excellence from himself, and cared deeply about the people entrusted to him. His patients appreciated not only his technical skill but also the compassion and confidence he brought to their care. He possessed a rare ability to reassure families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Although he achieved much professionally, it was his character, humor, generosity, and devotion to family that defined him most. He hoped above all that his children and grandchildren would live lives marked by integrity, kindness, and strong character.

Sadegh was truly one of one. His journey from a small town in Iran to becoming a respected surgeon in Western New York, combined with his unforgettable personality and joy for life, left an enduring impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

The family extends its deepest gratitude to the extraordinary caregivers and staff at Mt. Carmel Comfort Care House in Hilton, whose compassion and kindness made Sadegh's final weeks peaceful and comfortable.

In keeping with Sadegh's wishes, there will be no formal funeral or burial service. Family and friends are invited to celebrate his life at a Celebration of Life on October 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Stafford Country Club, 8221 Morganville Road, Stafford, NY 14143.
