Pauline May Crossett

Listen to Obituary

Pauline May Crossett passed away peacefully at home on June 4th, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on October 28, 1941, in Seaford, Delaware the fourth daughter of Viola (Bartz) Shattuck and Mervin Shattuck. Pauline shared stories of how she was her father's favorite and how he always carried her around on a pillow.

Because her family moved frequently throughout Genesee County during her childhood, Pauline attended many different schools before graduating from Alexander High in 1960.

In 1961, while serving as a bridesmaid at her sister Marion's wedding she was paired with groomsman David Crossett. The two hit it off wonderfully. She married David on September 15, 1962, in Batavia NY. They were the first couple to be married in the new Batavia Assembly of God Church, by Reverend John Brown.

Pauline and David built their life together in Batavia and quickly filled their home with lots of children, love, and activity. In addition to raising her own family, Pauline cared for many other children in her home over the years. In 1971, the family moved to Prospect Ave, where they spent the next 30 years.

Pauline operated a tight ship at home. Her children often laughed about how, after dinner dishes were finished, she would firmly announce "the kitchen is closed" meaning no one was allowed into the kitchen until breakfast the next morning - and she meant it.

Though she had several part-time jobs throughout her life, it was being a homemaker that she valued most. Money was often tight, so she mastered the art of canning and preserving food for her large family. Her children helped make applesauce, pizza sauce, spaghetti sauce, chili sauce, and canning vegetables. The family never ate at restaurants because Pauline prepared home-cooked meals every day. There was always one rule at dinner: you ate what she made. Baking is where she excelled. She made everything from scratch - cookies, pies, and her famous honey nut rolls. She loved bringing baked goods to wherever her children worked, and many throughout the community were blessed by her generosity and talent in the kitchen.

Family trips and camping adventures were another cherished part of life. The Crossett's often traveled together in their full 15-passenger van pulling a 40-foot travel trailer, with Pauline often taking the wheel. They visited family in Florida and Texas and spent time on the beaches in Delaware. In 1984, the family began camping at Rainbow Lake in Springville, NY, a tradition that continued for decades and eventually became the site of annual family reunions.

Pauline was the rock of her family. Her children knew they could always depend on Mom. She was always giving of herself - offering support, childcare, housework, helping to hang drywall or mud, or even financial assistance from her famous white-envelope "Bank of Crossett". Through both her words and her example, she taught her children to have a strong faith in God, how to persevere through difficult times, to work hard, the value of a dollar, and to always support one another.

Pauline is survived by her beloved "Honey" of 63 years David Crossett, Sister Ruth (Arnie) Johnson of Texas, brother-in-law Clarence Johnson of Batavia. And her children: Ryan (Debbie) Crossett of Batavia, Darlene (Andy) Ogozaly of Batavia, Scott (Sheri) Crossett of Batavia, Todd (Cheryl) Crossett of Batavia, Kris (Stacey) Crossett Hyattsville MD, Ginger (Jacob) Hoffman of Carbondale PA, Crystal Crossett of Batavia, and Stephen (Cindy) Crossett of Rimrock AZ. 16 Grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She is predeceased by her parents; her infant daughter, Faith; sister Marion (Roger) Watkins, sister Betty Johnson; grandson Michael Ogozaly.
