Michael J. Quinn, age 70, of Horseheads, Attica, and Batavia, New York. He passed away peacefully on December 1, 2025.
Mike was born on April 29, 1955, in Elmira, the son of the late J.J. Quinn and Joan (Backes-Quinn) Hamilton.
He attended St. Mary’s School in Horseheads and graduated from Attica High School in 1973. Mike spent 11 years working for Westinghouse in Horseheads and Attica, and part –time at the Attica Police Department. In 1984, He was hired by the Wyoming County Sheriffs until his retirement as a Sargent in 2005. After retirement, Mike took a position as a Lieutenant at the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility and returned to the Attica Police Department part-time, until retiring from the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility in 2017. Community-minded Mike was a volunteer firefighter for 39 years. He started at the Horseheads Village Fire Department, then the Attica Fire Department, serving as a Rescue Captain and First Assistant Chief.
During his career as a Sergeant Deputy Sheriff from 1984-1992, he was promoted to shift manager. He was a Fire Investigator member of the Emergency Response Team, SWAT, Crime Scene, and Crash Management. He was the first county-wide DWI Patrol Director from 1990-2005. Mike’s career as a Deputy earned him the Medal of Valor, Medal of Merit, Deputy of the year (Twice), Life Saving Ribbon, and the Regional Mothers against Drunk Driving Award in 2005.
He loved riding his Motorcycle and was a long-time member of the Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Club, NY chapter IV. In the club, he served as vice president, president, and chaplain. Mike and Sue enjoyed the many rides they had with the Blue Knights. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and taking cruises with Sue, especially to Alaska and Hawaii, which fulfilled his dream of being in all 50 states.
In death, Mike is reunited with his parents, J.J. and Joan (Backes-Quinn) Hamilton; step-father, Ross Hamilton, and brother-in-law, Daniel Medoff.
Mike is survived by his wife of 45 years, Susana (Ellingham) Quinn of Batavia; son, Matthew Quinn of Batavia; half-sister, Nancy (Kendall) Kunz of Las Vegas; stepmother, Sallie (Amico) Quinn of Las Vegas; stepbrothers, Giovanni (Cindy) Melven of Tennessee and Michael Melven of Attica; brother-in-law, Richard Ellingham of Batavia; sister-in-law’s, Amy Medoff of Colorado and Patricia (Chris) Beckley of Virginia; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Family and friends are invited to the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street in Batavia, for a visitation on Saturday, (December 6, 2025), from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Burial will be on Monday (December 8, 2025) at 1:00 pm in Maple Lawn Cemetery. Following the burial there will be a Celebration of Life, with refreshments, at the Quality Inn, 8250 Park Rd, Batavia, NY 14020, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
