James (Jim) R. Hofmann, 87 of Attica, passed away peacefully, on Saturday, September 20, 2025 at Premier Genesee Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Batavia. He was born March 21, 1938, in Batavia to the late Ernest H. and Cora L. (Lewis) Hofmann.
He is preceded in death by wife Margaret A. (Buckenmeyer) Hofmann, stepbrothers Laverne Hofmann and William Reed, and stepsister Frances (Reed) Folger.
Jim dedicated 36 years of honorable service to the New York State Police, primarily in Troop A, Batavia. He retired as a Senior Investigator in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), a distinguished plainclothes detective unit. Throughout his career, Jim held various roles—including road trooper, sergeant, and investigator—and was recognized with numerous commendations for his exemplary service.
He was deeply committed to the values of safety, integrity, leadership, and above all, service. Jim treated everyone with unwavering courtesy and professionalism, and was known for his compassion, concern, and respect for others.
Beyond his career, Jim was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend. His love for his family was boundless, and he never missed a chance to support his children and grandchildren at their sporting events. He found joy in the outdoors, bicycle riding, working on cars, drag racing, and hunting—but his greatest happiness came from spending time with those he loved.
Jim also served in the National Guard, attended Genesee Community College, and earned his bachelor’s degree from Brockport State College. His life was a testament to dedication, humility, and heart.
He is survived by his loving children, James R. Hofmann Jr. and spouse Laurene (Reding) Hofmann of Lima, grandsons Justin J. Hofmann and Jason R. Hofmann, both of Raleigh, NC; Gregory C. Hofmann and spouse Kim Johnson of Fairport; sister Joan (Hofmann) Dickinson of Hulberton, and many nieces and nephews.
