James D. Canty, of Stafford, formerly of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 15th, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on August 26th, 1939, in Batavia, a son of the late Daniel V. Canty and Frances Powers Canty.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Paulene Merkel Canty, who passed away on May 30, 2019, his brother Gerald "Red" Canty, and his sister Karen Rodon.
Jim served the community as a funeral director at H.E. Turner & Co., Inc. in Batavia for 32 years before retiring in 1992. Jim was a member of St. Joseph's Church and served as a member and past president of the Batavia Kiwanis Club for over 30 years. His love for golf was shared with friends at the Stafford Country Club, where he was a member for over 30 years. A 50 year member at the Seven Springs Country Club, Jim was also a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose. Jim was also a HAM radio operator, known by his call sign AA2XA, and was a member and past president of the Genesee Radio Amateurs.
Jim is survived by his children, Edward J. (Beth Warlick) Canty, Sherry (Mark Tundo) Canty, and Thomas (Cheryl) Canty. He leaves behind a legacy through his five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. His sister, Diane Gerould, along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins, also mourn his passing.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during visitation hours at H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia, on Friday, November 21st, 2025, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. His Funeral Mass will be at St. Joseph's Church, 303 East Main Street, Batavia, on Saturday, November 22nd, 2025, at 9:30 am. He will be laid to rest in Grand View Cemetery, Batavia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 25 Circle Street, Suite 102, Rochester, New York 14607, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
