Fred Lewis Smith, 93, of Elba and formerly of Bergen, passed away on May 9, 2026 at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia after a brief illness.
Fred was born on June 19, 1932 in Avon NY to the late Louis W. and Lula P. (Hardy) Smith and grew up in Pavilion NY.
Fred proudly served as former president of the Wyoming County Coon Hunters Association and as Assistant Chief of the Bergen Fire Department. An avid outdoorsman, he found great joy in hunting and spending time in nature. He was a breeder of champion bluetick raccoon hounds. Above all else, his family was the center of his life and his greatest source of pride and happiness.
Surviving is his wife, Karyle (Mierke) Smith; children Francis (Patricia) Smith, Brian (Sue) Smith, Deborah (Bruce) Miller, Shawn( Donna) Lane, Michele (Frank) Maniaci, Patrick (Debbie) Lane, and David (Denise) Morse; sisters Millie Smith and Betty Crabb; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents Fred is predeceased by six siblings: Carl Smith, Helen Richardson, Glenn Smith, Dorothy Miller, Roy Smith, and Mae McCauley.
Friends and family are invited to calling hours on Friday, May 15, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at H.E. Turner & Co. Inc. Funeral Home, 51 South Lake Avenue, Bergen NY 14416. Fred's funeral service will immediately follow calling hours at H.E. Turner & Co., Inc. Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest in a private burial at North Byron Cemetery.
