Ethel Mae Miles

Remembering a life of faith, service, warmth, and devotion- Ethel Miles was born March 27, 1947.

Ethel Miles, lovingly known to her family as "Bessie," lived a life distinguished by faithful service, steadfast commitment, and genuine love for others. She was a devoted sister and aunt whose beautiful, warm smile brought comfort and joy to family and friends.

For 48 years, Bessie was a dedicated employee of Kodak Inc. Her long career reflected the dependability, discipline, and loyalty that characterized every area of her life. Bessie was a devoted member and trustee of Mount Zion Baptist Church. She faithfully served through music and worship as a choir member and devotion leader. Her love for God was evident in her willingness to serve and in the gracious spirit she shared with her church family.

Her commitment to service extended to Eldorado Temple No. 32, Daughters of the Elks. During 48 years of faithful membership, she served for more than 30 years as local treasurer and for 24 years as state treasurer. She gave her time and talents generously and remained a committed worker for the organization.

Bessie also knew how to enjoy life. She loved to travel, delighted in playing bingo, and treasured time spent with those she loved. Her legacy is one of faith, family, service, and a joyful spirit that will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Miles, Sr.; her mother, Estella Miles; her longtime companion and the love of her life, Joseph Anthony Chatman; and her siblings, Cora Addison, Essie Addison, Mozell Riley, Annie Grimes, Willie James Adamson, Frank Swanson, Eddie Miles, and William Miles, Jr.

She leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Mrs. Hattie Ligon; her caretaker and niece, Mrs. Augustine Fleming; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She will be missed by her special friends Kennetha Jackson, Ruth Suggs, and Virginia Cure; her traveling partners Donna Bush and Hilda Hopkins; her Bingo Buddies Thelma Ross and Katie Epps; and her numerous friends at Empire Bingo, who have placed a special draped memorial chair in her honor for the next 30 days.

Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday, September 17, 2026 from 10:00 am to 11:00am, followed by a celebration of life at 11:00 am at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 516 Ellicott Street, Batavia, NY. Bessie will be laid to rest with her family at Elmwood Cemetery, 119 Harvester Avenue, Batavia, NY.
