Batavia - Edward R. Doody, Sr., age 79, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 9, 2026 at the New York State Veterans Home with his family by his side.
Ed was born on April 14, 1947 in Batavia, a son of the late Earl Ray and Jean Dean Doody.
He proudly served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1969. He dedicated 20 years to the City of Batavia Police Department, retiring with the rank of Sergeant. After retirement, he owned and operated Batavia Downlink Company and The Coin Shop, where he developed a deep passion for coin collecting and became known for assisting with estate collections. An avid golfer, he enjoyed golfing at Batavia Country Club, where he worked in the pro shop.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and community member, he embraced every opportunity to support his family. In the 1980s, he and his son, Ed Jr., shared a love of collecting baseball cards and attended numerous card shows throughout the region. He coached and sponsored soccer teams for his son through the Genesee Amateur Soccer Association and was actively involved in his daughters' dance studio, where he meticulously managed their books.
Following his beloved wife, he volunteered in the Notre Dame High School cafeteria, greeting students and staff with his signature infectious smile. He was a grandpa figure to many Notre Dame students and was a constant presence at his grandchildren's sporting events, performances, and activities, proudly cheering them on from the bleachers and stands. He also treasured the simple pleasure of gathering with friends for coffee and conversation. His kindness, dedication to family, and generous spirit will be remembered by all who knew him.
His wife, Linda M. Caruso Doody, passed away on November 30, 2021.
He is survived by his children, Edward R. Doody, Jr. of Pavilion, Patti (Jose) Arroyo and Lisa (Sam) Antinore, both of Batavia; grandchildren, Christopher Doody, Jay Antinore, Zoey Arroyo, Mazey Arroyo, Chase Antinore, Brody Arroyo and Jaxon Arroyo; his brother, Doug Doody of Lancaster; brothers-in-law, Anthony (late Bonnie) Caruso and Joseph (Debbie) Caruso, Jr.; both of Batavia and nieces and nephews.
There are no prior visiting hours. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 12, 2026 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 303 East Main Street, Batavia. Entombment, with military honors, will follow at St. Joseph's Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Notre Dame High School Foundation, 73 Union Street, Batavia, New York 14020.
