On Thursday, July 31, 2025, our beloved mother, Dorothy Ruth Barrett (Scarborough), met her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, face to face. She was 99 years old. Her husband of 75 years, John Donald (Don, JD) Barrett, preceded her in death on June 14, 2023.
Dorothy was the youngest daughter of Irvin F. and Eva A. (Klotzbach) Scarborough, born on March 31, 1926, in Basom, NY. She graduated from Oakfield High School in 1942, and The King's College in New Castle Delaware, in 1947, with a major in Music.
God gifted her with a beautiful voice, and she shared her love of music by singing at many weddings and church events, giving praise and honor to her Lord. She was the choir director at Grace Baptist Church, Batavia NY, for 36 years, and over the years, led the choir in ministry by singing cantatas at local nursing homes.
At King's, she met her future husband, Don, and they were married on October 18, 1947. God blessed them with two daughters: Sally (Tim) Fry of Elyria, OH, and Gayle (Gerry - deceased) Ludwig of Rochester, NY. They survive her, along with one sister-in-law, Joy Scarborough of Clermont, FL, four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, cousins and many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy loved God's Word and taught Women's Bible Classes and Sunday School for many years at Indian Falls Methodist Church, Corfu, NY and Grace Baptist Church, Batavia, NY.
She planted many gardens - vegetable and floral, which included 50 beautiful rose bushes. She shared the fruits of her labor with friends and family. She was a great cook and knew how to use the items in her vegetable gardens to the fullest measure. Being raised on a farm, her mom taught her many things related to food preparation and preservation.
God also blessed Dorothy with the ability to sew, and she created many beautiful clothes, including matching dresses for herself and her girls.
Dorothy was a godly woman who loved to tell people about her Lord and Savior! She will be greatly missed by her family and many special friends.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of H.E. Turner & Co., Inc. Funeral Home, 403 E. Main Street, Batavia. Dorothy will be laid to rest with her husband, Don, in Western New York National Cemetery, 1254 Indian Falls Road, Corfu on August 7, 2025 at 1:00pm. A Celebration of Life will follow at Grace Baptist Church, 238 Vine Street, Batavia at 3:00pm.
The family wishes to say a special thank you to the staff at the NYS Veterans Nursing Home, Batavia, NY, for their excellent care of Dorothy.
