Elba - Donald W. Gavenda, Sr., a beloved resident of Elba, passed away peacefully at Crossroads House on December 7, 2025, at the age of 94. Born on July 2, 1931, in Batavia, Donald lived a life marked by dedication to his family, community, and passions.
Donald was a long-time muck farmer in Elba, where he cultivated not only the land but also lifelong friendships. Later, he worked at U.S. Gypsum in Oakfield, contributing to the community's growth and development. His commitment to service was evident in his 70+ years with the Elba Fire Department, where he held every position, including Chief. His dedication to the department and his community was unwavering.
A former parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima in Elba, Donald's faith was a guiding force throughout his life. He was also a devoted fan of the Batavia Muckdogs, holding season tickets for many years, and an avid supporter of the New York Yankees.
Donald is survived by his loving children: Peggy (Randy Cole) Jayme, Donald (Tawny) Gavenda Jr., Paul (Tammy) Gavenda, and Gary (Sue) Gavenda. He was a proud grandfather to Phillip Gavenda, Donna (Tony) Betancourt, Cody (Cassie Haskins) Gavenda, Meredith (David Colloff) Jayme, Madeleine (Nic) Matarazzo, and Bailey (Mike) McDonnell, and cherished his five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Gavenda Sr. and Rose (Smitzney) Gavenda, his beloved wife, C. Ann (Warboys) Gavenda, his son, Thomas Gavenda, and his brother, Walter Gavenda Jr.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during visitation at Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Avenue in Oakfield, on Thursday, December 11, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A fireman's memorial service will be conducted at 6:45 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held in his honor at Holy Family Parish, 106 South Main Street in Albion, on Friday, December 12, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Elba Fire Department or Crossroads House, in memory of Donald's lifelong commitment to community service and care.
