Obituary of Merton E. Johns




Oakfield - Merton E. Johns, 95, of Oakfield, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2019, at The Grand Rehabilitation And Nursing At Batavia.



Mr. Johns was born July 25, 1923, in Elba, a son of the late Clarence and the late Mae Howard Johns.



A member of Grace Baptist Church, Mr. Johns was a member of the Oakfield Grange for over 75 years. He was recently honored by The New York State Grange for his longtime membership to the grange. Mr. Johns worked for the Genesee County Sheriff's Department as a deputy for 21 years. Following his retirement from the Sheriff's Department, Mr. Johns worked at Batavia Turf Farms for many years and part time for Les Johns Construction and Graham Manufacturing.



His wife, Ruth M. Harvey Johns, passed away on October 16, 2012.



He is survived by his children; Howard (Doreen) Johns and Donna (Jim) Dwyer, both of Oakfield; five grandchildren; Robert (Kathleen) Johns of Stafford, Lynette (Michael) Morris of Oakfield, Juliette (Timothy) Hyatt of Coos Bay, Oregon, Christina (Rocco) Barbieri of Rochester and Thomas (Flora) Dwyer of California; ten great-grandchildren; Ally, Luke and Austin Dwyer, Savannah Pangrazio, Giovanni Barbieri; Nash and Peyton Johns, Garrett Morris, Lucas and Derrick Hyatt; his sister; Shirley Platt of Batavia and several nieces and nephews.



He is predeceased by his siblings; Howard Johns, Alice Maystead and Helen Miller.

Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday at the Grace Baptist Church, 238 Vine Street, Batavia, where funeral services will follow visitation at 6 p.m. Pastor Donald A. Shirk will be officiating. He will be laid to rest in Reed Cemetery, Oakfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Merton's memory may be made to Grace Baptist Church, 238 Vine Street, Batavia, New York 14020.
