Mr. John H. "Jack" Byrne, 85, of Batavia, died Sunday (July 21, 2013) at the United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia.



Mr. Byrne was born June 7, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio, a son of the late James P. and Lillian C. (Oleson) Byrne.



A loving father and grandfather, Mr. Byrne was a 1946 graduate of Ashtabula High School in Ashtabula, Ohio.



In 1948, he signed with the Cleveland Indians and was a pitcher for the Batavia Clippers from 1949 to 1950 under manager Ed Kobesky.



Mr. Byrne was a veteran serving with the U.S. Army during the Korean War from November 6, 1950 to November 30, 1952 with the rank of Corporal. He trained with the 101st Airborne Infantry Division in heavy weapons and was sent to the Far East on August 23, 1951.



He married a Batavia girl, Rita Jankowski on March 31, 1951 at Sacred Heart Church in Batavia. They renewed their vows 50 years later at church.



From 1952 to 1993, Mr. Byrne worked at LeRoy Machine, retiring in 1993 as project engineer. In 1958, he became licensed in New York State in general insurance. He owned and operated Byrne Insurance from 1958 to 1995.



Mr. Byrne served on the Batavia City Council from 1975 to 1980, representing the 6th Ward.



He was an avid sports fan of the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians and the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish.



Mr. Byrne was a member of Ascension Parish, The Holy Name Society, where he served as past president, Polish Falcons Nest 493, St. Nicholas Club, AARP, United States Uniformed Services - Retired and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.



Survivors include his wife, Rita (Jankowski) Byrne of Batavia; four children, R. Michele (Robert) Jordan of Pittsford, Sharon A. (Gerald) Fraterrigo of Batavia, Jacqueline A. (Jerald) Schumacher of Wyoming and Jonathan P. Byrne of Pendleton; six grandchildren, Heather (Robert) Fisher, Brianna (Patrick) Lewis, Jenna Fraterrigo, Joseph Fraterrigo, Ryan Schumacher and Morgan Schumacher; a great-grandson, Charles Jordan Fisher; two brothers, Thomas (Patricia) Byrne and James (Carol) Byrne; two sisters-in-law, Rose Szczesny and Jeanette (Robert) Terry; two brothers-in-law, Eugene (Molly) Jankowski and John (Marilyn) Jankowski and several nieces and nephews.



There are no prior calling hours. His Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at Ascension Parish, 15 Sumner Street, Batavia. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, DC.
